If you’ve ever traveled for a business trip or vacation, you will probably have noticed that short-term rentals are becoming more popular. While you won’t likely get housecleaning services or room service, many short-term rentals offer perks and other amenities you wouldn’t find at a hotel. Here are some of the benefits of renting rather than staying at a hotel for your next family vacation, and some reasons why you may want to choose a hotel.

1. Less Money

If the length of your stay is going to be a week or more, renting a condo, house, or apartment can be a lot less than staying at a hotel. Even the cheapest hotels will probably cost you up to $1,000 a week depending on where you are staying. A lot of nice rentals charge a similar amount for much longer than that and some even prorate the rent if you don’t stay the whole month.

Another huge savings if you choose a vacation rental over a hotel will be on food. When you stay in a hotel, you really don’t have a choice but to eat out for every meal, or order in room service. This adds up very quickly. At a rental you have a kitchen to use at any time you wish. You can eat dinner out when you want, or you can prepare all of your meals in your own kitchen.

2. Nicer Location

Most hotel chains build in commercial areas, which restricts you to freeway views and fast food restaurants. When you rent, however, you get to choose the neighbourhood and area where you want to stay. A lot of rental homes are in residential areas, which gives you access to beautiful parks, restaurants, and other entertainment that locals enjoy.

3. More or Better Amenities

Hotels rarely have billiard rooms, large screen TVs, hot tubs, and in-suite washer and dryers, full-sized appliances, and pots and pans for the kitchen. These are fairly common in rental apartments, though. As long as you don’t mind cleaning up for yourself, vacation rentals also have full-sized kitchens that are fully equipped with everything you will need to prepare meals during your stay. Rentals will also often have patios or useable outdoor green space you can enjoy if you want to sit out-of-doors by yourself or with guests.

4. A Lot More Space

The average hotel room is 320 square feet. That’s pretty small even for two people, let alone if you have kids staying there with you, too. A vacation home gives you a lot more space, from double to quadruple that what you would get in a hotel, that you can use to spread out, stretch out, and enjoy.

5. Amenities

When you stay at a hotel, you get a real vacation. You don’t have to clean up after yourself, you don’t have to cook your own meals, and if you don’t want to leave your room, they’ll even deliver your meals to you. Other amenities like a pool, gym, business services, dry cleaning or laundry services, a spa, and valet parking are just a few of the services you can use at a hotel.

6. Full-Service Staff

When you are new to the area or new to vacationing in general, sometimes a hotel is nice because there is always someone there to answer your questions and cater to your every whim.

7. Flexibility

Hotels allow you the flexibility to come and go as you want; you can check in or out any day of the week and stay as long as you want, as long as the room is available for that time.
