E-cigarettes are marketed as a way to help smokers quit. But there is a growing concern that they may be causing more harm than good. More importantly, if you own an e-cigarette that happens to be made with lithium-ion batteries, you’re at risk of it exploding in your face.
In a vape shop, an e-cigarette might explode due to overcharging or during a fitful night. But if you’re trying to work on a laptop computer or something else electronic, then you most likely have just become a victim of a battery explosion. I will share some tips and tricks to help you avoid this terrifying experience.
1. Do Not Overcharge Your E-Cigarette
Some e-cigarettes come with built-in batteries; others are designed to charge via USB cable. Regardless, you should always make sure your device is charging at a reasonable rate. If the battery is filled beyond its capacity, it could become unstable and malfunction. A vape shop will usually have a chart that indicates how long the battery should run before it needs to be recharged.
2. Do Not Use Batteries That Are Damaged
If the casing of your battery is damaged, it’s time to throw it out. Even if you can see that the actual electronics are intact, you run the risk of overheating and exploding. Over time, lithium-ion batteries deteriorate and lose their ability to hold a charge; don’t wait until there is an explosion to say, “I told you so.”
3. Do Not Use Incorrect Chargers
Your e-cigarette charger should be the same brand and model as the battery. If not, it could overheat and cause an explosion. Do not use it if you suspect that your e-cigarette pack may have been tampered with or doesn’t look quite right. Otherwise, you could get a nasty burn from your battery exploding in your face.
4. Do Not Use Incorrect Voltage Settings
Even if you have the correct voltage setting, it could still combust at a lower voltage than average if the battery is damaged. If you’re unsure whether your device is charging correctly, read the information on its package. You should also check with a technician or technical support specialist to ensure that your device utilizes the correct, current settings.
5. Do Not Touch Batteries, Running Fumes and Wires
It would be best never to charge a battery or use an e-cigarette when you wear latex gloves or plastic bags. Never touch a running e-cigarette as well. In addition, it’s always a good idea to avoid putting your face next to the tip of your e-cigarette as it is being used. If the tip is red hot, it could burn you!
These tips should help you avoid having your e-cigarette explode in your face. Always be mindful of the device’s power and design specifications. If you suspect that the battery is damaged or becoming unstable, stop using it immediately and take it to a professional for an inspection. E-cigarettes can be a great way to kick the smoking habit for good!
